Ancajas Defeats Countryman Sultan in All-Filipino Battle – PRESS RELEASE
FRESNO, Calif – The “Pretty Boy” is still top of the 115-pound heap. Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas defended his IBF junior bantamweight title with a unanimous decision over Jonas Sultan in front of 5,102 spectators at the Save Mart Center.
Scores were 119-109, 119-109 and 117-111.
It was the fifth successful title defense for Ancajas (28-1-1, 19 KOs) in this history-making match, as it marked the first all-Filipino world championship fight since 1925. Ancajas controlled the distance with his southpaw jab, blunting Sultan’s attack and leaving no doubt in the minds of the judges.
Ancajas saw four-bout knockout streak come to a close, while Sultan (14-4, 9 KOs) dropped his first bout since a November 2015 decision loss to Go Onaga.
WBA super flyweight champion Kal Yafai made his U.S. debut a triumphant one, as David Carmona retired on his stool following the seventh round. Yafai (24-0, 15 KOs), who made the third successful defense of his title, knocked down Carmona four times en route to the stoppage win.
