Billy Joe Saunders Back – The WBO world middleweight champion has talked a lot about fighting in 2016, but he has not entered the ring yet this year for a myriad of reasons. This Saturday in Cardiff, Wales, Saunders (23-0) returns after more than 11 months away from action to face the challenge of once- beaten Artur Akavov (16-1) of Russia with Saunders’ WBO belt at 160 pounds on the line.
Saunders won the WBO belt last December when he won a majority decision over veteran Andy Lee. Since then he has been looking for a big money fight, even challenging middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin to a bout. Saunders will need to get by the unsung Akakov, but if he does, you can expect the 2008 British Olympian to hit the social media outlets with more challenges of “Triple G” featuring his typical bad spelling.

The fight headlines Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions card at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.
Warren is planning eleven fights on the live event. The co-feature has popular WBO world lightweight champion Terry Flanagan facing Orlando Cruz of Puerto Rico with Flanagan’s belt on the line.
The card counts on three regional title fights as well, including the much anticipated third meeting between Thomas Stalker and Craig Evans. For this one, Stalker walks in with the WBO European lightweight title. The two men have fought twice before and have not decided anything between them, logging two 10-round split draws.
News too late for this video sees that Ahmet Patterson has been pulled from his match for the vacant WBO European title at 154 pounds with Liam Williams due to an injury suffered in a street attack. Williams (15-0-1) will now face Gabor Gorbics (22-4).
