First Look Zlaticanin vs Garcia – Showtime’s 2017 schedule sees the MGM Grand in Las Vegas hosting the rematch between Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA “Super World” featherweight title. The card features a second title bout as WBC lightweight champion Dejan Zlaticanin makes the first defense of his title as he faces undefeated Mikey Garcia (35-0).

Zlaticanin, who represents the country of Montenegro, is 22-0 as a professional after an extensive career as an amateur. He won the WBC title back on June 11th with a third round stoppage of Bolivia’s Franklin Mamani and has a quality resume that includes wins over Ivan Redkach, Petr Petrov and 3 weight class world champion Ricky Burns.

As for Garcia, we last saw him in July of this year when he dismantled Elio Rojas in five rounds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Prior to that, the 28 year old had not been seen since January of 2014 when he won a WBO World super featherweight title. A win over Zlaticanin will give Garcia a world title in a third weight class, as he also held the WBO featherweight title before coming up to lightweight.

In this latest Boxing Channel report, we are joined by our analyst Kid Hersh to take a look at the particulars of this match-up for the WBC’s World Lightweight belt.

Zlaticanin will have height and reach disadvantages and it was generally considered that Garcia did not look to have lost anything at all during his layoff of two plus years. Though Zlaticanin is the defending champion, he will enter this fight a big underdog.
