Miguel Flores faced off with Mexican brawler Mario Briones on a card that would mark his headlining debut on PBC on FS1, Tuesday, January 12, 2015.
Flores (19-0, 9 KOs) broke down Briones in Round 1, working behind his jab and then pummeling his opponent with hooks to the body. As the rounds progressed, the two stood and traded with each other, proving to the other that neither of them would go out with a fight.
Flores pounced on Briones with violent left hooks, beautifully thrown uppercuts and a laser-guided, sweat-spraying right hand.
Briones (27-5-2, 20 KOs) would not be denied. He took all the punches that Flores could dish out and would return with his own combination right hands in the 5th round.
Early in the the third round Briones received a cut on the right eye. It continued to bleed badly throughout the fight. Flores had never gone past eight rounds before and Briones was pressuring him into a dogfight.
The judges saw Flores as the more accurate puncher (45 percent of his power shots landed compared to 36 percent for Briones, according to CompuBox).The jab and ring prowess of Flores lead to a thrilling UD victory, keeping his undefeated victory in tact.
