GBP Rocks Inglewood Year End Show Results – Oscar De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions hooked up with HBO Boxing at the Inglewood Forum to present their final big show of 2017.
The main event will go down as one of 2016’s historic moments in the boxing world as it featured the final fight in the legendary career of Bernard Hopkins as the 51 year old future hall of famer faced Joe Smith Jr for the WBC’s International title.
Hopkins entered the ring as “The Executioner” a throwback to his traditional nickname after using “The Alien” in recent years. Smith Jr came out and looked a bit bigger than Hopkins in the physical matchup. Smith Jr had a confidence building first round but an accidental headbutt cut him in round two. Hopkins showed the entire toolbox of experience to hold off the aggressive Smith Jr. Many of the rounds were very close until the dramatic eighth roud where Smith caught Hopkins in a corner and unloaded. Hopkins wound up falling through the ropes but he was lucid and claimed hehad been pushed out of the ring. The replay showedthat Smith Jr did not push but rather a flurry of punches sent Hopkins to the floor. Hopkins hurt his ankle in the sequence, but he wanted to continue. The official winner via TKO is Joe Smith Jr, and Bernard Hopkins ends his career as he started it, with a loss.
Just before Hopkins and Smith Jr, Joseph “Jojo” Diaz squared off against Horacio Garcia in defense of his NABF featherweight title as the event’s principal co-feature. Garcia gets points for trying, but Diaz put on a sharp performance over ten rounds that saw the judges award him a clean sweep, 100-90 on all three cards.
In the second co-feature WBO world cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk successfully defended his belt against Thabiso Mchunu, methodically breaking down the South African challenger in methodical fashion to earn the stoppage in the ninth round.
The HBO broadcast also showed standout middleweight Jason Quigley of Ireland make short work of veteran Jorge Melendez, stopping him at the 2:24 in round one when Melendez corner threw in the towel after watching their man hit the canvas several times. Quigley goes to 12-0 in impressive fashion.
