Golovkin “Middleweight Is More Popular Because of Great Boxers Fought In This Division” – Saturday May 5th at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California. The “Cinco de Mayo” weekend will see undefeated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) defending his WBA and WBC world middleweight titles against Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (36-3-1, 23 KOs). The match will be televised live on HBO starting at 9 p.m. ET. It is the first time Golovkin has headlined a non-pay-per-view telecast since 2016.
Golovkin now has a chance to equal a Bernard Hopkins’ record, when he puts his numerous belts on the line against Martirosyan. Counting his 2010 first-round knockout of Milton Nunez to claim an interim alphabet strap as his first world title win, he has since made 19 successful defenses – one short of the record, set by “The Alien” Hopkins between 1995 and 2005.
Today, Golovkin and Martirosyan host a Los Angeles area media workout and our man Marcelino Castillo caught up with GGG, This is what he had to say about the fight.
