Groves vs Cox in Saturday WBSS Action – This Saturday sees the World Boxing Super Series 168 lb tournament continue as “Saint” George Groves faces Jamie Cox in the tourney’s third quarter-final bout.
The popular Groves enters the WBSS eight man tournament as the number one seed. In Cox, he faces a fellow countryman in a bout that will also see Groves defending his WBA world title at 168 pounds. Cox has worked his way up through the ranks, winning a regional WBA title this past May to earn this shot. Cox went 2-0 in 4-round tune-ups in July of this year as he looked to stay busy before signing on to the WBSS. Groves will certainly represent the most tested opposition of Cox’s career.
The winner of the bout is expected to face Chris Eubank Jr in the next round of the tournament. Eubank Jr erased the hopes of previously unbeaten Avni Yildirim via third round stoppage this past weekend to advance out of the quarterfinals. Earlier in September, Britain’s Callum Smith won a unanimous decision over Sweden’s Erik Skoglund in the tournament’s first quarter-final bout.
Promoter Sauerland Events has seven fights in all planned for the live event, including a co-feature 168 lb bout that sees John Ryder facing Patrick Nielsen.
