WBA world super featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales is beginning his next fight preparation in his home country of Panama amidst changes to his camp.

Corrales is coming off the second succesful title defense of the belt he won back in April of 2016 when he defeated Japan’s long-time champion Takashi Uchiyama. This past July 15th saw him defend his belt with a tenth round stoppage of a game Robinson Castellanos at the Inglewood Forum.

The major change by Corrales involves bringing in famed Cuban trainer Ismael Ortega to work on his physical conditioning.

Ortega, a fixture on the Panamanian boxing scene for the better part of the last two decades, has been associated with boxers Luis “El Nica” Concepción, Vicente “El Loco” Mosquera, Jean Piero Perez, Nehomar Cermeño, Ricardo “Maestrito” Cordoba among others.

Thursday, August 10th saw the pair hook up for their first session together to measure where Corrales stands. In the near future, Ortega will implement a program that will heighten Corrales’ strength and speed. Part of this program will be implemented with the help of Dr. Roberto Socarras, who specializes in the preparation of high level athletes.

On working with Corrales, Ortega stated “I love his attitude, he wants to learn and do his part. The most important thing is that the athlete be ready to work.”
