Kovalev Post Fight – Last night, Sergey Kovalev became the former WBA, WBO and IBF world light heavyweight champion after experiencing a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Andre Ward.
For Kovalev, it was the first defeat of his professional career and he goes to 30-1-1. Kovalev had held theWBO version of the 175 pound title since his August of 2013 defeat of England’s Nathan Cleverly, and in November of 2014 he added the WBA and IBF belts when he defeated future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins. Since then, Kovalev had successfully defended the trio of belts four times before running into Ward.

After the fight, Kovalev and his promoter Kathy Duva attended the post fight press conference and despite the obvious disappointment, the former champion was measured in his assessment. Kovalev and Duva both invoked a rematch clause they put in the contract as defending champion, and Kovalev appears eager to get to the rematch as soon as possible.
