Latin Prospect Watch With Diego Morilla (Argentina) – In this new segment, we are joined by our Latin American correspondent Diego Morilla to look at the top three “prospects” from Argentina.
Argentina is a hotbed of boxing with a vibrant regional scene that sees dozens of events held throughout the country on a monthly basis. As such, there have been fighters from Argentina impacting the world scene since the 1920’s when the “Raging Bull of the Pamplona” Luis Angel Firpo challenged Jack Dempsey for the heavyweight championship of the world and nearly made good.
More recently, fighters such as Lucas Martin Mathysse and Marcos Maidana have given fight fans something to talk about on an international level and there are more to come. Check out Morilla’s “scoop” on the following three fighters to keep an eye on:
#1 Fabian Maidana – The younger brother of former world champion Marcos Maidana, the 25 year old is now 14-0 as a professional.
#2 Brian Castano – At 14-0, the 28 year old captured the WBA’s world title at super welterweight in his last outing, a win in France over the experienced Michel Soro.
#3 Alberto Melian – A decorated amateur and Olympic representative, he is already one of the best known fighters in Argentina and at 27 years old you can look for him to attempt a fast-tracked pro career.
