Lebedev vs Gassiev – Moscow, Russia is the setting for a potential passing of the torch in the cruiserweight division as 37-year-old WBA and IBF champion Denis Lebedev (29-2) takes on the challenge of 23-year-old fellow countryman Murat Gassiev (23-0) this Saturday night.
Lebedev has been in the world title picture for the last half decade. His resume includes wins over Roy Jones Jr and James Toney, among others. In May of 2013 he lost his WBA world cruiserweight title to Panama’s Guillermo Jones in a match that is remembered most for the abuse that Lebedev took. After that fight Lebedev took 15 months off to recover, but he has won four fights in a row since, regaining the WBA world title and adding the IBF belt.
The card features a second world title fight as 140 pound IBF world titleholder Eduard Troyanovsky (25-0) faces the challenge of undefeated Julius Indongo (20-0).
The card promoted by World Boxing features seven bouts in all, five in the cruiserweight division, and a pair of vacant regional belts are also up for grabs in 12-round bouts.
