Mundine vs Browne is Jan 17th in Australia – Former middleweight and super middleweight world champion Anthony Mundine returns to action on January 17th when he faces veteran Tommy Browne. At first glance there is nothing unusual about a 42-year-old former champion returning for another payday and shot at glory.
The fight is for a vacant WBO Oriental title, meaning Mundine has paid a sanctioning fee to the WBO and therefore has their attention. Word is that Mundine would challenge WBO world welterweight champion Jeff Horn with a win on the 17th. The WBO named Terence Crawford the #1 contender to Horn’s belt and that fight was being talked about for the March or April time frame.
Mundine, a second generation fighter, remain s one of the most popular fighters on the Australian scene. Mundine’s last fight came in February of 2017 when he lost to Danny Green and prior to that, he had not fought since November of 2015 when he took a loss to fringe contender Charles Hatley. The fight with Horn would obviously be at a catchweight so Horn would not be risking his title and the proposed match-up with Crawford could materialize at a later date.

One sign that Mundine still commands a bit of a following “Down Under” is that the fight is already being offered at several sports books. The line sees Mundine open as a favorite. However, the numbers are not massive in his favor. As outlined above, Browne is in a position to play spoiler to a lot of plans. Of course, the ultimate deciding factor will be whether Mundine can look threatening at 42 years old.
