Pacquiao Stops Matthysse and Wins WBA Welterweight World Title.
Saturday, July 14th saw the return of the “Pride of the Philippines” Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs) against Argentinas’s hard puncher Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse (39-5-0, 36 KOs) for the WBA world welterweight championship. The event took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was streaming live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+.
The fight was Pacquiao’s first since his July 2017 decision loss to Jeff Horn in Horn’s native Australia. It was also Pacquiao’s first fight since 2001 that did not feature trainer Freddie Roach in his corner. Pacquiao parted ways with Roach in April.
Pacquiao caught Matthysse with a hard left uppercut that dropped him in the third. Two rounds later, Pacquiao earned his second knockdown when a short right hook landed square on the temple and Matthysse took a knee. Another two rounds later, and Pacquiao scored another big left uppercut that put Matthysse down for the third and final time, giving Pacquiao the KO.
