Chicago Heavyweight Mike Mollo (20-5-1) faced Poland’s Artur Szpilka on two separate occasions in 2013. Szpilka, who fights Deontay Wilder this coming Saturday, January 16th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the WBC World Heavyweight title, was a young up and comer with a (12-0) record when he met Mollo for the first time.
That fight saw Mollo score knock-downs in rounds 1 and 4 before Szpilka scored the stoppage late in the sixth round. Much controversy surrounded the fight, as Mollo was bloodied by accidental headbutts and the tough Chicago fighter was ahead on the cards due to the knockdowns. Calls for a re-match were immediate.
The two did it again in June of that year and another wild fight ensued as both men hit the canvas before Szpilka broke through and earned the stoppage in the fifth round.
Mollo’s record includes a win over Kevin McBride, and he has faced the likes of Andrew Golota and DaVarryl Williamson in his long career. He has been off for more than two years but is retuning to fight in Poland this February. In this Boxing Channel exclusive, our own Ray Flores interviews Mike Mollo on the upcoming Wilder-Szpilka showdown.
