Santa Cruz vs Frampton Retrospective – Showtime Championship Boxing is gearing up for their huge January 28th offering that sees Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz meet in their highly anticipated rematch for the WBA world featherweight title.

The first match between the two went down on Showtime this past July 30th, and that fight saw Santa Cruz enter with the WBA belt and a 32-0-1 career mark, while the challenger Frampton took a record of 22-0 into his first fight in the featherweight division. What resulted was a twelve round struggle that saw Frampton emerge with the belt after winning a Majority Decision. The match gave Frampton a second world title and solidified Frampton’s 2016 “Fighter of the Year” campaign.

Featherweight was the third weight class that Santa Cruz had held a world title in, having defeated Abner Mares to win the 126-pound title in August of 2015. Santa Cruz was making the second defense of the belt, having stopped veteran former champion Kiko Martinez of Spain in February of 2016. Though he entered the fight a favorite at the sports books, Santa Cruz and his managerial team worked a rematch clause into the first fight’s contract, ensuring a return bout for Santa Cruz should he take a loss.

TBC caught up with Carl Frampton in Las Vegas roughly 10 days before the rematch. Check out what “The Jackal” had to say.
