This was a smart addition by the promoters. Monaghan is a ticket seller, plain and simple. I just hope that the majority of his fans stick around for the HBO fights as well.

I think Monaghan is going to get Kovalev later this years. Why? Because since he is a ticket seller in the New York area, he will help fill an arena. He will give Kovalev a big audience to fight in front of on the east coast. And of course, Monaghan will be well compensated for being able to produce such a full arena.

I didn't like referee David Field's work in this fight. He allowed Muriqi to get away with backhanding, continual pushing, head-butting, heeling and hitting with thew forearm. Without all that, I believe Monaghan would have stopped Muriqi.

I heard some rumblings after the fight about a possible matchup for Monaghan against Juergen Braehmer. There was talk of trying to get Brahmer to NY to defend against Monaghan which might not be realistic but I guess we will see.

Monaghan is ready for a step up. He draws well and promoters like him because he sells a lot of tickets (the main reason he was on this card). But eventually there comes a time to step it up and see what you really have.

If the Braehmer fight can't be made and it might not be able, a name to keep an eye on for Monaghan is Tavoris Cloud. Cloud has struggled recently but would still represent a major step up for Monaghan. I'd bet HBO would be willing to televise as a co-feature and may even push for this bout. Why? The winner becomes a natural opponent for Kovalev who badly needs viable opponents at this time.
