Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward Media Call – This past Tuesday, November 8th, saw both Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward attend a media conference call. The call is part of the promotion for the upcoming HBO pay-per-view light heavyweight fight set for November 19th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Kovalev spoke first, joined by trainer John David Jackson, promoter Kathy Duva and manager Egis Klimas. Ward spoke in the second half of the conference call and though his trainer Virgil Hunter did not attend, Ward was joined by a representative of Roc Nation Sports, his promoter.
This is undoubtedly one of the biggest fights of the year and both fighters as well as HBO deserve a certain amount of credit for building this fight up for a year.
Despite the quality of the offering, HBO is far from sure of what the pay-per-view returns will be. Though Kovalev and Ward are the #1 and #2 ranked fighters at 175 pounds with the respected Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, neither has a history of being a cross-over draw. The fight is now less than two weeks away so we are entering the last wave of publicity with this conference call. That they would schedule it on the day of the American elections seems like an error if you are trying to get the most eyes and ears on your event.
Next week, the fighters arrive in Las Vegas and TBC’s live fight coverage begins.
