TBC Interviews Super Featherweight Jason Sosa – November 25th saw Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa edge New Jersey’s Jason Sosa by Majority Decision at the MSG Theater and on HBO. The 130-pound encounter took part as the main support bout of HBO’s Sergey Kovalev versus Vyacheslav Shabranskyy main event
Since 2015, Sosa has kept a very high level of competition, including a June of 2016 win over Javier Fortuna in China that won him the WBA world title at 130 lbs. He went on to successfully defend the belt in Monaco against England’s Stephen Smith in November of 2016 to close out a strong year. In April of 2017 Sosa faced the all-world WBO champion Vasyl Lomachenko and he lost for the first time in more than six years.
This fight with Gamboa was supposed to be a return fight and the original opponent was set to be veteran slugger Robinson Castellanos. Gamboa was 27-2 heading into the fight and though many considered Gamboa a fighter whose best days were behind him, he is still a highly skilled former champion.
The hard working Sosa was on his way to the gym when TBC’s Frank Lotierzo caught up with him to talk about the aftermath of his showdown with Yuriorkis Gamboa. It isn’t surprising that Sosa is not making any excuses after the win, at one point saying “I blame myself.” Check out more of what Jason Sosa had to say in this TBC exclusive.
