Verdejo Outpoints Flores in PR – Bob Arum and Top Rank were in San Juan, Puerto Rico this Friday night, February 3rd for the return of undefeated Felix Verdejo (22-0) as the WBO’s Latino lightweight champion defended his title against Oliver Flores (27-2-2) of Nicaragua.
Verdejo’s return was highly scrutinized for several reasons, and the undefeated former Olympian seemed to struggle to get his rhythm going in the early going of the fight before out-boxing a game opponent. Verdejo had not fought since June of last year due to a motorcycle accident and people were eager to asses his first fight after that August incident. Also, the island of Puerto Rico is at a point in time where there are no world champions that call the island home and in many circles Verdejo is the next championship hope on the island.
