Earlier this week, the WBA announced that Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward had formally vacated his title.

Ward recently signed a three fight deal with HBO and is widely expected to campaign as a Light Heavyweight going forward.

HBO is working to match Ward up with Sergey Kovalev in 2016, but Ward's also made waves in the media as he appeared to complain about how he is being forced to move up in weight and how he will not be rushed into a fight with the Russian known as “The Krusher”.

Kovalev's manager Kathy Duva implied the match with Kovalev and ward was a done deal for 2016, unless Ward got cold feet.

Ward's returning the Super Middleweight belt would seem to be a step in the right direction, and Ward's next fight is expected to be at Light Heavyweight, so at this point all that remains to be set is a date for Ward's return.

In other WBA news, the on again, off again re-match between Ruslan Chagaev and Fres Oquendo for the WBA's Heavyweight title is off again, as Oquendo has shoulder surgery scheduled for the last half of November.

Chagaev won the belt over Oquendo with a Majority Decision, and Australia's undefeated Lucas Browne (23-0) was named Chagaev's mandatory challenger.

Browne was pushed aside by Oquendo's request for a re-match and the rugged Australian has been in limbo since.

Heading into 2015, Browne had high hopes that it was going to be his year.

When the match with Chagaev didn't immediately materialize, Browne seemed relegated to challenging every ranked heavyweight in sight over the internet in the hopes of a scoring the big match he is craving at this point in his career.

To stay busy, Browne took a match with journeyman Julius Long in August of 2015 and he had a lackluster performance.

It is safe to say that 2015 has not gone Browne's way so far, but a match and a win over Chagaev could leave him with the WBA's World title, and that would finally put him where he wants to be on the world heavyweight scene.
