Joshua vs. Ruiz Jr weigh-in results -Right on target he scaled 247.8 lbs at the boisterous weigh in, more than 20 pounds lighter than the rotund 268lbs challenger for his world heavyweight titles.
Joshua came in at 247.8 lbs, which is a couple of pounds heavier than when he stopped Alexander Povetkin last September. Ruiz was 262 lbs when he fought Alexander Dimitrenko in April, but for this weigh-in he was 268 lbs. It’s one of the heaviest weights he’s fought at in the past few years, albeit with the note that he took this bout on short notice to replace the roided out Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller… who would’ve been over 300 lbs anyway.
‘I was 155 lbs when I fought Wladimir Klitschko,’ said Joshua. ‘That was too heavy. ‘I felt a bit sluggish at times in that fight so I’ve been working on the diet since. I was about 147 lbs against Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin and felt really good.’
A sizeable advance guard of the 8,000 travelling Brits reported to be coming to the fight kicked up a din at the weigh-in, also in Madison Square Garden.
They gave vent to a full-bloodied rendition of Sweet Caroline and roars of Oh Anthony Joshua. Ruiz came out to the strains of a live Mariachi band. Joshua was serenaded onto the stage by a gospel choir.
