Tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Canelo Alvarez and Rocky Fielding will face off in a WBA Super Middleweight title fight. The fights will be live streamed via DAZN, with a start time of 9:00 pm ET.
Alvarez (50-1, 34 KOs) recently beat Gennady Golovkin in September, with a decision win. Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) will be making his first defense of his WBA title which he claimed by beating Tyron Zeuge with a fifth round TKO. Although Fielding does have the size and reach advantage, Alvarez is the more skilled of the two fighters.
Fielding said, “He doesn’t make many mistakes but it’s boxing. He could make one and I could get to him.” He added, “I went to Germany, no one gave me a chance and I took it with both hands. No one will give me a chance here but I believe in myself. Champions win and defend it wherever they need to defend it.”
Canelo stated, “I’m very happy to be here at Madison Square Garden. It’s just yet another story, another dream realized in my career and this new phase of my career with DAZN. I’m very happy and I’m motivated. Perhaps many don’t give the credit to Rocky Fielding that he deserves but for a reason, he’s a world champion. I know who he is, I’ve trained very hard, I know the challenge I have in front of me. I know that I have a tough fight but I like challenges and I know we’re going to make history. I’m ready for that.”
Unfortunately, tonight’s co-main event between David Lemieux and Tureano Johnson was canceled due to Lemieux’s inability to make weight. Therefore, IBF junior lightweight champion Tevin Farmer will take co-main honors against Francisco Fonseca. Tonight’s other title fight features Irish star Katie Taylor, who will be defending her lightweight belts against Eva Wahlstrom.
