Lotierzo Looks at the Super Flyweight Division (115 LBS) – Boxing historians will look back at 2017 and they will say it was the year the Super Flyweight Division broke into the mainstream.
The year started off with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez as the #1 pound for pound fighter in boxing atop a weight class full of talent. After years undefeated, a supposed foil for Gonzalez emerged in the form of Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who took his belt and his “0” in their first meeting and then showed the world it was no fluke by scoring the definitive KO in the rematch.
That rematch went down on HBO in a card headlined by “Chocolatito” that featured a handful of high-level bouts in the weight class. The night of the “SuperFlys” provided a big stage for fighters such as Juan Francisco Estrada, Naoya Inoue, Carlos Cuadras and Brian Viloria as the little guys performed in front of the unprecedented attention. Estrada, with his win over Cuadras, will challenge Rungvisai in early 2018 on a card labeled “Superfly II.” Yes the weight class has arrived!
In this latest year-end installment we are once again joined by our “killer” analyst Frank Lotierzo to talk more in-depth about the 115 pounders as we head into calendar year 2018. Do not miss what Frank has to say right here at TBC.
