Atlantic City Boxing HOF 2018 Inductions Announced – The Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame announced the “Class of 2018” as next year’s inductees were announced. Earlier in November, the AC HOF stated that they have reserved the weekend of June 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the Claridge Hotel for the festivities and earlier today the big question was answered: So who is in?
Topping the 25-man list is former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield and legendary octogenarian promoter Bob Arum. Holyfield, who last fought in 2011, has been making the rounds and June should see him in Atlantic City. Arum, who turns 86 on Dec. 8th, recently celebrated his 2000th event.
A big deal is being made about the induction of President Donald Trump. All politics aside, Trump was a big player on the international boxing scene during his days as an Atlantic City casino owner and has been seen rubbing elbows with boxers from Mike Tyson to Oscar De La Hoya throughout his public life. At this point, we will rate the chances of Trump attending as low.
But the list of inductees is strong and there are sure to be a great deal of people from the boxing world in the Atlantic City for the weekend. Though there is a hope for an all-encompassing “true” Boxing Hall of Fame on the scale of the baseball shrine in Cooperstown, New York, this type of weekend should be supported and if you are anywhere near Atlantic City in early June we encourage you to attend. Though boxing is a major, international sport capable of filling soccer stadiums, this type of event has an intimate feel which allows fans closer access to the athletes.
Special note: Our sister site The Sweet Science had BERNARD FERNANDEZ inducted in the non-participant category. Fernandez was ringside for the glory years of boxing in Atlantic City, covering the sport for the Philadelphia Daily News.
Congratulations to Bernard!
