Beterbiev Blasts Prieto – Friday night, December 23rd saw Quebec, Canada’s Lac Leamy Casino host an eight fight boxing card promoted by Yvon Michel and his GYM Promotions. The card was made noteworthy by the appearance of highly regarded light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev in the main event, as the 10-0 undefeated WBA North American champion defended his belt against rugged Isidro Ranoni Prieto (26-1-3).

Beterbiev, who is originally from Russia and has a huge amateur resume, moved to 11-0 with a forceful and definitive first round stoppage over Prieto. Heading into the fight, Prieto had never been stopped. In his lone previous defeat, he extended undefeated Eleider Alvarez the full 12 rounds.

The win is likely to move Beterbiev up the rankings in the 175-pound division, where the respected Transnational Boxing Rankings Board had him ranked #6 before the fight.

Beterbiev is 31 years of age, and he would like to throw his name in the hat for a world title shot. This fight was Beterbiev’s fourth defense the WBA North American belt that he won with a second round stoppage of Tavoris Cloud and prior to Friday’s win the WBA ranked him #3 at Light Heavyweight. The WBA currently recognizes Andre Ward as their “Super World Champion” while England’s Nathan Cleverly is rated the WBA’s “World Champion.”
