Eddie Hearn 2016 Promoter of the Year – Eddie Hearn has been England’s top promoter for the last several years but in 2016 the 37-year-old, second-generation boxing showman stepped up his game onto the international stage and consistently out-shined the competition.

Eddie Hearn’s father, Barry Hearn, promoted such notables as Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn, and Naseem Hamed while building Matchroom Sport into a multi-faceted sports empire. Eddie now runs the boxing side of the business, which has become a larger piece of the Matchroom operation since he assumed command. In tandem with their broadcasting partner SkyTV, Matchroom promoted 22 events in the calendar year of 2016.

In February of 2016 Hearn hosted the Carl Frampton versus Scott Quigg IBF/WBA world super bantamweight unification bout. To pull this event off, Hearn worked with rival promoter Barry McGuigan to make the show happen, and Hearn guided the winner, Frampton, to his first appearances in the United States shortly afterwards. Frampton ends 2016 on a short list of “Fighter of the Year” candidates.

Hearn has also long controlled the career of Olympic heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua. With the changing heavyweight division in 2016, Hearn and Joshua moved early and they successfully established the 26-year- old Joshua as the biggest attraction in boxing. In April, Joshua took out IBF world titleholder Charles Martin to grab a world belt earlier than planned, and he made two successful defenses to go 3-0 for the calendar year.

Hearn was willing to go all in with Joshua as well, furiously working to make a Joshua versus Wladimir Klitschko showdown happen in 2016. In the end Hearn gets the match for April of 2017 but that will be because of all the behind the scenes work he put in this year.

In November, Hearn promoted his newly signed heavyweight Luis Ortiz’ bout with Malik Scott in Monaco. Though the bout failed to give Ortiz the intended highlight reel Hearn wanted, it was notable in that Hearn had spread his wings promoting a major event beyond the British Isles for the first time.

In late November, Hearn was spotted in Las Vegas at the Sergey Kovalev versus Andre Ward fight and there can be little doubt that Hearn is planning a Matchroom Boxing debut in the United States for 2017.

Eddie Hearn has delivered several of the year’s most memorable shows, and on the business end he shifted into high-gear in 2016, making Matchroom synonymous with boxing at its highest level. Matchroom Boxing sits poised to step onto the world stage in 2017.

For his work delivering fights and for his work behind the scenes to make the fights happen, Eddie Hearn is the 2016 Promoter of the year.
