Joseph Parker Faces Razvan Cojanu May 6 – Saturday, May 6th was the date set for WBO world heavyweight champion Joseph Parker’s first title defense as he was scheduled to face England’s Hughie Fury in the main event of the Duco Events boxing card scheduled for Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.
Fury signed for the world title fight despite having last fought in April of 2016. Fury stated that the long layoff and fight cancellations in the ensuing time period were due to a bout with a severe case of acne. With two weeks to go before the fight the promotion was left scrambling for a replacement opponent.

In steps Razvan Cojanu, a 30-year-old Romanian fighter based out of California. Cojanu is 16-2 overall and he went 3-0 in 2016, winning a pair of 6 rounders to go with a 10 rounder that earned him the #14 ranking with the WBO.
If the 24 year old Parker didn’t think the WBO belt put a target on his back he knows now as a bevy of big names led by WBC world champion Deontay Wilder offered their services to replace Fury. With two weeks notice, salvaging the fight with Cojanu seems like the safest way to make sure the show goes ahead on the appointed date (it is being shifted into a smaller arena).
